Talent and Education in Quantum Technologies

Author: Bakhmat M.

A significant challenge facing the quantum technology industry is the shortage of qualified talent. Subject-matter experts are hard to find outside of research and academic circles. McKinsey predicted that by 2025, fewer than half of quantum jobs would be filled, presenting a major barrier to adoption. This skills gap is a key concern.

Addressing the Skills Gap

To ensure organizations have access to the necessary quantum computing talent, leaders need to invest in upskilling initiatives. Companies and institutions are actively working to develop the quantum workforce through various educational initiatives and programs.

IBM Quantum is investing in education initiatives that have reached over 5.4 million learners, aiming to prepare a workforce to advance quantum. Google Quantum AI offers educational resources, including a free introductory Coursera course on quantum error correction, designed for a wide range of learners. Pasqal offers a learning platform called Quantum Quest to help users start their quantum journey and explore neutral atoms quantum computing.

Academic institutions are also crucial in developing talent. The number of Master’s degree programs in Quantum Technology increased by 10% to 55. The European Union and the UK have the highest number and density of graduates in relevant fields. Universities are also part of national quantum technologies programs and hubs, facilitating research collaboration and developing a trained talent pool.

Importance of Education and Training

As the quantum industry evolves, understanding quantum computing principles becomes increasingly valuable, particularly for those in tech-related fields. Educational initiatives are not only preparing future researchers and engineers but also aiming to make quantum concepts more accessible to a wider audience, including business leaders.

Bridging the talent gap is seen as crucial for accelerating innovation and enabling organizations to embrace the quantum future. Companies that are proactively addressing this challenge are better positioned for leadership.
